If you spent April Fools away from the internets, you might have missed a few brilliant April Fools pranks. Google Nose Beta, Beautiful. Fast. Powerful: Gmail Blue, Google Maps saw the introduction of Google the 'Treasure Map' layer (with great introduction video too), TMZ's 'Chris Brown: I Finally Learned That Beating Women Is Wrong.' (Oh.. It wasn't a joke?), Twitter is going vowelless (you can still get vowels if you fork over $5 a month), Sony invented headphones for cats, Virgin launches Virgin Little Red service, a flight service with a glass floor in the plane, Whole Foods introduced the 'Cattle Cam', so you can see what your meat eats, Football manager unveils Football Manager 1888, (a football manager game I'd probably actually want to play) and Reddit bought Team Fortress 2. (Wait. Wat? Did Team Fortress 2 just buy Reddit?) And if you're Dutch, you could see male oriented nerd-site Tweakers.net and female oriented horse fanatic site Bokt.nl join forces and start a datingsite with their collective userbases. Genius!
But the joke that elevates April Fools to a whole new level has to be YouTube. While they introduced shutting the service down and 'no longer accepting entries', now the hunt for the best video will start. I suggest watching the attached video above. The video features YouTube cameos of personalities KassemG, Where the hell is Matt Harding, iJustine, Rafi Fine and others. They have a $500 grand prize as well as a MP3 player for the ultimate winner of the best video!
But! The joke didn't end there for YouTube, they actually started announcing nominees!
A livestream that spanned over 12 consecutive hours, this is an April Fools follow-up that will be hard to top for the future. Well done! YouTube takes the April Fools cake.
On a side note, Gmail was first introduced on April 1st. I remember thinking (as many did) it was a April Fools joke because of the unbelievable storage space coming with it. Most of us were stuck to a 25mb hotmail inbox, and 250mb if you were lucky enough.
